Safety for Parents

The Society of Unseen Things is a game played between children and a known adult. We write every letter and every storyline; the child's own adult prints and delivers each one, and that adult must be known to the parent or legal guardian of the child.

If a grandparent, relative or family friend is running this for your child, they must have your knowledge and agreement. If this is the first you have heard of it, stop the letters and talk to whoever is sending them — the Society will not mind waiting.

We never send a letter to a child.

Every letter comes to you, and you decide how and when your child sees it. That is the promise, and it is deliberately a narrow one: it is about the letters and how they are delivered, not a claim that your child can never touch anything we make. If we ever build something a child could use directly — a real-world hunt, say — it would be yours to switch on, on your own account, and we would say plainly on this page what it does and what it holds.

We hold a codename, an age band and a few interests — never a child’s real name — and no child signs up here. The letters themselves are printed at home by the adult who delivers them; the one thing we post is a packet of catalogue cards, a few times a year, and it goes to the address an adult gave us, addressed to the codename that family chose — never to a child's name, and never to an address we were not given by the adult responsible for it.

We ask for that address at the moment there is something to post and not before. A family who never orders a card never gives us one.
